How production labels hire for freelance roles

Most of our productions are commissioned on a project by project basis. We hire for these shows, often last minute, from our extensive and inclusive talent pools of freelancers.

Each area will have a person in charge of freelance hires - a talent manager, head of production, line producer, production manager, or a crewing scheduling manager. Their role is to crew shows up with suitably skilled talent as and when a programme commission gets the go ahead.

How we find people

We will often hire freelancers with proven skills of a particular show or genre. We are also constantly reaching out to new talent either by advertising for specific roles/programmes or more generally to create talent pools of skilled people that we can call upon as and when positions arise.

Whether its for a specific role or a talent pool, we advertise our freelance editorial and production management roles at thetalentmanager.com, across our social media channels including LinkedIn and Twitter, and inside our Facebook Groups. And we share our vacancies with a wide range of other organisations, too.

Some production labels will also accept CVs speculatively - see here for a list of our production labels.

In addition, we meet potential candidates through regular networking events either within our business or in collaboration with our various industry partners - our ‘Meet the Talent Manager' events can be a great way to get advice on CVs and job-hunting generally. We also take candidates from various industry schemes eg ScreenSkills trainee programmes.

And finally, if you're considering your career options and think a freelance production career may be for you, you'll often find us delivering outreach sessions at Schools and Colleges through Education and Employers.

Once we’ve attracted a range of candidates we identify CVs with skills that match the criteria for the role.  Selection is then by interview or practical assessment - both will be designed around the specific requirements of the role.
